Airports are integral to hundreds of thousands of stories. They are the gateway to a city, the first and last impression for visitors and locals. That’s why the ongoing remodel of the Albuquerque International Sunport has been such a meaningful project for us at Rocky Mountain Stone. The improvements are not only making the travel experience more enjoyable but are also showcasing the beauty, strength, and longevity of natural stone and quartz surfaces throughout the airport.
A Complex Undertaking: Relocating the “Dream of Flight”
One of the most technically challenging aspects of this remodel involved the “Dream of Flight” sculpture, a striking focal point within the Sunport. The large block of travertine that supports this artwork originally stood in the center of the main corridor. As part of the remodel, it needed to be relocated to the center of the new food court.
This was no small feat. Our team carefully dismantled the block, re-fabricated it to fit seamlessly within its new space, and then reinstalled it with precision. Projects like this highlight the level of detail, craftsmanship, and problem-solving that go into working with natural stone in complex, high-traffic public spaces.
Creating Functional and Beautiful Public Spaces
Beyond the sculpture, Rocky Mountain Stone contributed to the remodel by providing durable quartz surfaces for many of the public areas. Quartz countertops now enhance the TSA checkpoints and new seating areas throughout the airport, offering a sleek look combined with long-lasting performance. These tops were selected not only for their visual appeal but also for their ability to withstand heavy use—a must for one of the busiest hubs in the state.
Supporting the Food Court Expansion
Perhaps the most visible part of the remodel for travelers will be the food court and dining areas. With 14 restaurants in total once construction is complete, the Sunport is creating a welcoming space for travelers to relax, grab a bite, or enjoy a coffee before boarding their flight.
Rocky Mountain Stone has already provided countertops for seven of these restaurants, with work underway to supply tops for the remaining six currently under construction. In total, we’ve fabricated and installed more than 2,000 square feet of countertops for this project. Each installation balances functionality, durability, and design—ensuring that these surfaces will serve travelers and staff for years to come while maintaining their beauty.
A Gateway That Reflects Albuquerque
At Rocky Mountain Stone, we take pride in projects that allow us to highlight our craftsmanship in public spaces that represent New Mexico. The Sunport reflects Albuquerque’s character and culture. By incorporating quality stone surfaces throughout the remodel, the airport is elevating the traveler experience while standing out as one of the best regional airports in the country.
Next Time You Fly, Arrive Early
With the remodel well underway and new spaces opening regularly, the Albuquerque Sunport is becoming a destination in itself. Once the food court is fully operational, travelers will be able to choose from 14 different options for dining and shopping. We are so grateful to be a part of the stories of Albuquerque’s travelers!
If you’re flying out of Albuquerque soon, we encourage you to arrive a little early. Take a moment to appreciate the new design, enjoy the upgraded amenities, and, of course, admire the stonework that ties it all together.
At Rocky Mountain Stone, we’re honored to have played such a key role in this transformation, helping create a gateway that travelers can be proud of for years to come.
