When you think of the homeless you probably picture a man standing at an intersection, with an outstretched hand. You don’t see the nearly invisible homeless families right here in Albuquerque. They are mostly hidden, trying to sleep on streets you don’t travel, in cars parked in vacant lots, on rooftops, in abandoned buildings, or with any luck, in shelters.
You probably don’t know that an astonishing number of our homeless are kids. In fact, APS says 6,000 to 7,000 of its students are homeless and many of them are under six years old, innocently being swept along in a tide that’s crashing to shore, leaving their lives a wreck.
Counters for a Cause
Last month, Rocky Mountain Stone held their annual Counters for a Cause sale. Attendees received discounts on their purchase of granite countertops and landscape materials and the opportunity to give back to their community. Three percent of the sale proceeds, totaling $6,070.44, were donated to the Alex Fund, a special project by The Rock supporting Albuquerque’s children.
The Alex Fund
“Hurting children and families can sometimes be forgotten. The Alex Fund was established to help homeless and near homeless children. We are grateful for Rocky Mountain Stone and their commitment to impacting children in a positive way,” said Danny Whatley, Executive Director, The Rock at NoonDay. Alex was an inspiration during his 5 short years here on earth by giving graciously and having a great desire to help the homeless. The Alex Fund was established in his name. “It’s an honor to support the work of Noonday and continue Alex’s loving and nurturing spirit,” shared Scott Lardner, president of Rocky Mountain Stone.
